Franson Enlists in Navy Seabees
January 25, 1969
By Stephen Hartgen Minneapolis Star Staff Writer

Former 12th Ward Alderman Richard V. Franson, 40, has enlisted in the Navy and has requested duty in Vietnam, it was learned Friday. Franson's father, Verner, said his son enlisted last week in the Navy Seabees, the Navy's construction wing, and plans to make a career of the Navy.

In September, Franson announced his intention to run for mayor of Minneapolis if Arthur Naftalin did not seek re-election to the post. With Naftalin's withdrawal, he was considered one of several possible DFL candidates.

His father said Franson has abandoned plans to run for the office, and does not plan any further political career in the city.

He said his son is stationed at the Seabee training center in Gulfport, Miss., where he will complete his basic training in 60 days and then be sent to Vietnam. He said his son hopes to receive a commission.

** Franson, DFL alderman from 1963 to 1965, ran for re-election in 1965 but was defeated by Arne Carlson. Franson charged Carlson had violated the state Corrupt Practices Act. The state Supreme Court, however, upheld Carlson's victory. **
